Laparoscopic Partial Nephrectomy
With advancing laparoscopic skills and technology, it has become feasible to remove only the portion of a kidney containing a small tumor rather than removing the entire kidney. This advanced operation can be successfully performed laparoscopically through the same small incisions for laparoscopic nephrectomy, although significantly more instrumentation is required. Laparoscopic partial nephrectomy is technically more challenging than removing the entire kidney, and is currently reserved for select patients with smaller, peripheral tumors. The primary advantage of laparoscopic partial nephrectomy, in addition to a minimally invasive approach, is to effectively remove a small kidney tumor without compromising the function of the entire kidney. This becomes especially important in patients at risk for future loss of kidney function, such as those individuals with diabetes, hypertension, multiple kidney tumors, etc.
